Resolution Update

3 days so far, 2 runs. The first one was a cold morning at 6 AM, but I did it. A "mini-marathon" of 2.6 miles. Ugh. I hate running in the cold. The next day, I awoke before the alarm... to the sound of rain. I've not yet gotten the habit back to that point yet, so I punted. But that afternoon (yesterday) I suited up and joined the distance team on their "easy" recovery run. 3.5 miles, but I got dropped by the front pack halfway through. Not bad overall, though. Last night I was up till midnight, so I bagged the AM run plan. I brought the clothes for a PM run to make-up, but I'm still tired and sluggish from the previous day, so I think I'll bag today and focus on getting another 2.5 or so tomorrow AM. If I can do that, it will have been an OK week.

AWESOME! I had a great run myself this morning! I took a minute and a half off my 5k time! WOOHOO FOR ME! Anyways, hey I'm thinking of doing the Miami Marathon in 2009. Wanna get in on some of that action?

It's SO hard to get back into the habit. As I am STILL working on 100% recovery from the groin tear last year at camp, I shoot for 1-2 easy runs a week. (this "healing slowly as you get older" thing SUCKS!) I do still lift weights 3 days a week as well, so I like that. My weight is up, but it's MOSTLY the good kind of weight. But, it's still weight, which is the enemy of running. If this groin thing EVER heals, I'd love to run another half. (and MAYBE a full marathon, we'll see...) If only I were more disciplined regarding food - especially late-night "entertainment" eating. I'm not really hungry at 9:30pm...

New Years Day, Tommy and I started taking walks in the morning (which is no where near as intense as running, but for us it was still a big step), but I also HATE doing that stuff in the cold (when it takes you longer to get bundled up than it does to actually do the exercise, you know you've got a problem). Even though I enjoyed the walking part, I also don't like to give up my sleep (neither does Tommy), so we compromised and started using our mini trampolines again. That was working out well, but then all the sloshing around was upsetting Tommy's stomach. SO, now we are doing nothing, but we'd really like to do SOMETHING, just not sure of the best way to go about it. Any ideas?

Cheers to you, though, on your efforts so far. :)

becky, find an actual yoga studio. Not a gym that offers yoga classes but a yoga studio! I know there's one in Mt. P but I don't know about the rest of chucktown. But most yoga studios have like five or six different kinds of yoga and you can work your way up to the harder power yoga type classes. Plus, yoga rocks! Next to running & dancing it's like my favorite thing in the world. But I always end up so relaxed I never can consider it a workout for myself. I guess it comes along with 14+ years of dance & gymnastics. But it feels SOOO good! If nothing else you can always go hit up B&N for some workout dvds or something.

Who CARES about this running stuf? HOW do you get Dry-erase crud off a white board?????

Windex or 409 or other cleaner works. They sell "expo" removal stuff with the markers, but it's just 409. You can almost clean it with water and elbow grease. That's one good reason to give students detention, so somebody else can provide the elbow grease.

And, for Lauren, the answer is "no, thanks." I'll MAYBE think of another marathon when I either (A) get good enough again where I can really run one, or (B) get bad enough that I don't care how I do. Right now, I'm in that nasty no-man's land where out-of-shape guys pushing 40 live, not good enough to run well, but still young enough to feel like I oughtta. Ick.

awww come on, you got two years to get out of that ick phase;) I plan to do the whole but it all depends on how my training goes. I'm not going to do it if I can't run the whole thing. I'm at least going to do the half though! But my plan is to do the whole. So come on, two years...snap out of it;)

Larry before you start training just remember 3 words, "Marine corps Marathon"

WOW! My husband would totally get in on that Marine Corps Marathon action. Since he's active duty he gets an automatic in. It'd be fun:)!

Just don't ask Larry how he did the first time he ran the Marine Corps.

I'll admit it--I did great at USMC '96. For 20 miles. My buddy Jeremy, who was a little faster than me (and, in retrospect, who I should not have been keeping up with), asked at mile 17, "how are you feeling?" Within a mile of saying "great," I began to cramp up in one, then both, legs. By 19 I was wishing Phidippides had died earlier, and by 20 I was to the point of being unable to bend my knees. That makes for a crummy last 6 miles. All the self-pep-talks & mental toughness in the world won't let you run when the muscles shut down. Around 22 the guys on the medical bikes offered me assistance, but I plugged on, at 15 minutes a mile for the last 6. Under 3 hours at 20 miles, 4:30 at the finish. That wouldn't be so bad, except for the fact that Jeremy went 4:03 and a few years later Adam (superhubby) went 3:47. So I really ought to run another to break 4 hours sometime, just so I can hold my head up. But since I can barely make myself run 3 miles at a time, that's a ways off.

I believe that was 3:38.Hey, I don't normally run well so every second counts. If it makes you feel any better the last 6 felt like a death march. I did the same thing when I ran the 50K but my discomfort started much earlier. I did eventually get to the finish in 5:26:00. I am very confident you would do very well if you ran again.
