Best TV Series Ever

I think we've safely established that the "Rocky" series is the best movie series ever... although the first three "Star Wars" (I mean the first three MADE, not episodes I-III) may be in the conversation. Even so, I have to be in a certain mood to watch Star Wars, or the Godfather (arguably the finest individual film ever made), or even LOTR.

But TV... ah, there's a tough one. And it's made tougher by the fact that entire series--supposedly even very good ones--have come and gone without me ever seeing an episode. But even though I love Seinfeld, and Cheers, there really is no contest. The best ever TV series is certainly MASH. Like "Rocky," it doesn't matter what mood I'm in... if MASH is on, I can watch it and enjoy it. Best character development of any sitcom ever. And if you don't tear up every time Henry Blake's chopper goes down in reruns, you have no heart. Period.

MASH definitely is one of the best ones. It covers everything from humor to the seriousness of mortality and everything in between. It takes a really close look at human nature, even to the point where you might not like what you find. However, sometimes it can hit a little too close to home... I tend to like stuff that has a little more of the fantasy element. I'll always be a Star Trek fan for that reason. Gene Roddenberry and his predecessors succeeded in creating an entire amazing world that a person can get lost in, probably even more vast than the Star Wars universe. Star Trek remains my favorite (DS9 among all of them), but I'll admit that it may not be as accessible. MASH probably has more mass appeal, as long as people don't mind the whole war thing going on. I wonder what real war veterans think of the show...

I put my vote in for Law & Order. When you add up all the shows from all 3 spin-offs, it's been on the air longer than any other show. Even the original is only a year or two off the title. And I don't care what you say, a good cop show is a good cop show.
I'm also a huge fan of CSI.
And if cable-only shows are in the running, anything in the I LOVE THE 80s trilogy are game. :-)

I like a good Law and Order, or CSI. And I admit that Star Trek is classic, esp. the original series. I have a soft spot for Next Generation because it came out while I was in college. In terms of 30-minute shows, MASH is by far the best (and it's more than "just a sitcom.") But for hour-long dramas, you have a point. I will say, though, that I can surf right by any of those shows if I'm not in the right frame of mind. MASH grabs me every single time.

Yeah, I'll admit that once I hear the first few notes of the theme song, I'm immediately hooked for the next half hour (or next several half hours if they are playing them back to back). Actually, there was an episode of DS9 that I watched recently where some of the characters were helping out in a make-shift hospital right next to where a battle was going on. While I was watching it I thought that it reminded me of MASH (and they even had one of the characters psychoanalyzing himself, and the other people on the medical staff were using humor to keep sane), so you probably would have liked that one. It was one of the more serious episodes.

Mad Money w/ Jim Cramer
Fast Money w/ Dylan Ratigan
Closing Bell w/ Maria Bartiromo
Mythbusters w/ The Mythbusters

But we don't have cable, so it's hard to see any of it... Hey, Sal... Do one on your favorite books.. I have a few good reads!
